From Waves to Beans: A Surfer’s Journey Through Costa Rican Coffee Culture
In search of a new adventure, I traded my surfboard for a coffee tour in Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province. Join me as I explore the Doka Coffee Estate and the charming towns of Grecia and Sarchi, guided by the ever-knowledgeable Arturo.
A Coffee Lover’s Paradise
As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless hours chasing waves along the sun-drenched coasts of Central America. But every now and then, I like to swap my surfboard for a different kind of adventure. This time, I found myself drawn to the lush, green hills of Costa Rica’s Alajuela Province, where the promise of a rich coffee experience awaited me. The Doka Coffee Tour was calling my name, and I couldn’t resist.
The journey began with a scenic drive along the Pan-American Highway, a route that offered glimpses of Costa Rica’s vibrant culture and history. Our guide, Arturo, was a gem. His friendly demeanor and wealth of knowledge made the trip even more enjoyable. As we passed the Agriculture Monument and the Monument to Juan Santamaria, Arturo shared stories that brought these landmarks to life. It was a refreshing change from the usual surf spots, and I was eager to dive into the world of coffee.
Immersed in Coffee Culture
Arriving at the Doka Coffee Estate, I was immediately enveloped by the intoxicating aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans. The estate, nestled amidst rolling hills, was a sight to behold. Arturo led us through the plantation, explaining the ancient techniques used to cultivate and harvest the “Golden Bean.” It was fascinating to learn about the meticulous process that goes into producing some of the world’s finest coffee.
The hands-on experience was a highlight. From picking the ripe cherries to witnessing the roasting process, every step was an eye-opener. And of course, the tasting session was a treat for the senses. Sipping on a freshly brewed cup of Doka coffee, I couldn’t help but appreciate the craftsmanship that went into every sip. It was a moment of pure bliss, akin to catching the perfect wave.
Exploring Grecia and Sarchi
After a delightful Costa Rican lunch buffet, we continued our journey to the charming town of Grecia. Known for its unique metal church, the town exuded a sense of tranquility. The church’s high ceilings and ornate stained glass windows were a testament to the town’s rich history and architectural prowess.
Our final stop was Sarchi, the birthplace of Costa Rica’s artisans. Here, I was captivated by the vibrant art crafts and souvenirs on display. The highlight was undoubtedly the world’s largest ox cart, a magnificent structure that stood as a symbol of the town’s artistic heritage. As I wandered through the factory and souvenir shop, I couldn’t resist picking up a few mementos to remind me of this unforgettable day.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized that the Doka Coffee Tour was more than just a journey through coffee plantations and quaint towns. It was a celebration of Costa Rican culture, a reminder of the resilience and creativity of its people. And as I returned to the coast, ready to ride the next wave, I carried with me the rich flavors and vibrant colors of this beautiful land.
