Chasing Blue: A Day at Costa Rica’s Celeste River

When the opportunity to explore the Celeste River in Costa Rica came up, I couldn’t resist. Known for its stunning blue waters and lush surroundings, it promised a day of adventure and natural beauty that was too tempting to pass up.

A Dawn Departure to Remember

The day began before the sun had even considered rising, with a 5:00 a.m. departure from San Jose. As a seasoned traveler, I’m no stranger to early starts, but this one felt different. The anticipation of exploring the Celeste River, nestled within the Tenorio Volcano National Park, was enough to shake off any lingering sleepiness. The drive out of the Central Valley was a journey in itself, with the landscape gradually shifting from urban sprawl to lush greenery.

About an hour and a half into the drive, we stopped for breakfast. The meal was a simple affair, but the surroundings were anything but. The air was crisp, and the morning light painted the landscape in hues of gold and green. It was the perfect prelude to the adventure that lay ahead.

Into the Heart of Tenorio Volcano National Park

By 9:30 a.m., we arrived at the park, ready to embark on the guided tour. The trail, known as Sendero Las Sorpresas, promised a 3-kilometer walk through some of the most breathtaking natural beauty Costa Rica has to offer. As someone who spends a lot of time analyzing wave conditions and beach breaks, it was refreshing to immerse myself in a different kind of natural wonder.

The highlight of the trail was undoubtedly the Celeste River Waterfall. Standing at 20 meters high, it was a sight to behold. The water cascaded down in a mesmerizing display, its blue hue a stark contrast against the surrounding greenery. We continued to the viewpoint, where we were treated to a panoramic view of three of the five craters of the Tenorio Volcano. The weather was on our side, offering clear skies and unobstructed views.

The Enchanting Blue of Rio Celeste

The trail led us to the Blue Lagoon, a serene spot that felt almost otherworldly. A short walk from there, after crossing a couple of wooden bridges, we reached the “Teñideros,” the point where the river takes on its famous blue color. The guide explained the natural phenomenon behind this vibrant hue, adding a layer of intrigue to the already magical setting.

As we wrapped up the tour, we passed by fumaroles, a reminder of the volcanic activity beneath our feet. The entire experience was a feast for the senses, from the sights and sounds to the earthy scent of the forest. It was a day well spent, and as we made our way back to San Jose, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to explore such a unique corner of the world.

For those of you who, like me, are always on the lookout for the next adventure, the Celeste River Tour is a must-do. It’s a chance to step away from the waves and into a different kind of natural wonder, one that leaves you with memories as vivid as the river’s blue waters.
