A Journey Back in Time

As I embarked on the Durango Jeep Tour into La Plata Canyon, I was immediately transported back to the road trips of my youth. The open-air Jeep, the rugged terrain, and the promise of adventure reminded me of the countless miles I traveled with my family across America’s vast landscapes. This time, however, I was accompanied by my husband, and we were eager to explore the hidden gems of Colorado’s wilderness.

Our guide, Jay, was a local with an infectious enthusiasm for the canyon’s history and ecology. His knowledge of the area was unparalleled, and he tailored the tour to our interests. As we ventured deeper into the canyon, Jay shared stories of the old mining days, painting vivid pictures of a bygone era. As we made our way through the canyon, I was struck by the vibrant colors of the fall foliage, a tapestry of golds and reds that seemed to glow in the crisp October air.

We were fortunate to have the canyon almost to ourselves, with only one other couple sharing the Jeep with us. This solitude allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of our surroundings. At one point, a group of deer appeared in the middle of the road, a gentle reminder of the wildlife that calls this place home. It was a moment of pure magic, one that I was grateful to capture with my camera.

Jay was attentive to our desire to document the journey, stopping frequently to allow us to take photos. He even maneuvered the Jeep to ensure we had the perfect angle for each shot. It was a thoughtful gesture that made the experience all the more memorable.
