Pedaling Through Paradise: A Sustainable Journey on the Murray to Mountain Trail
Join me as I embark on the Murray to Mountain Trail Bike Tour, a journey through Victoria’s stunning landscapes. Discover the charm of Beechworth, the thrill of cycling, and the warmth of local hospitality.
A Warm Welcome in Beechworth
Arriving in Beechworth on a crisp Friday evening, I was immediately charmed by the town’s historic allure. My husband and I checked into Foxgloves B&B, where John and Sheila, our gracious hosts, welcomed us with open arms. The B&B exuded a quaint charm, with its traditional decor and cozy atmosphere. After settling in, we ventured out to the Ox & Hound for dinner. The meal was nothing short of spectacular, setting a high bar for the culinary experiences to come.
The next morning, we gathered with fellow guests for a hearty breakfast, sharing stories and laughter. The camaraderie was palpable, and it set the tone for the adventure ahead. As we mounted our bikes, the excitement was tangible. The Murray to Mountains Rail Trail awaited, promising a journey through some of Victoria’s most picturesque landscapes.
Cycling Through Nature’s Bounty
The trail from Beechworth to Wangaratta was a test of endurance, but the breathtaking views made every pedal stroke worthwhile. The path, though a bit rough with twigs and sticks, was a testament to the raw beauty of the region. For those with road bikes, a word of caution: the terrain can be challenging, but it’s all part of the adventure.
Our first major stop was Gapsted Winery, where we indulged in a gourmet platter and wine tastings. The sparkling saperavi was a revelation, and the prosecco was equally delightful. The winery’s policy of allowing guests to pick up purchased bottles at the end of the tour was a thoughtful touch, ensuring we could enjoy the ride unencumbered.
Continuing on to Myrtleford, we found respite at the King St Apartments. The accommodations were perfect, offering a kitchen and washing machine, which were much appreciated after a long day of cycling. Dinner at Bastoni Pizzeria was a communal affair, with good food and even better company. The sense of community among the tour participants was one of the highlights of the weekend.
A Journey of Discovery and Reflection
Sunday’s ride took us from Myrtleford to Feathertop Winery, a journey that was both challenging and rewarding. The Italian wines at Feathertop were a delight, and the service was impeccable. However, the subsequent stop at Ringer Reef Winery was less impressive. The atmosphere was lacking, and the service left much to be desired. It’s an area where the tour could certainly improve.
The final leg of our journey led us to Bright, a bustling town where we met friends at the local brewery. The vibrant energy of Bright was infectious, and it was a fitting end to our cycling adventure. Though we chose to cycle back, the rain and a puncture made for a challenging return. The kindness of the staff at Feathertop, who offered us shelter and a free glass of wine, was a testament to the warmth of the region’s people.
Reflecting on the tour, I see immense potential. With a few tweaks, such as offering different routes for varying skill levels and refining the dining options, this tour could cater to a broader audience. The natural beauty of the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail is undeniable, and with a focus on sustainability and community, it offers a unique opportunity to explore Victoria’s stunning landscapes while supporting local businesses. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour to fellow eco-conscious travelers seeking an authentic and enriching experience.
